The Department of Sanitation’s (DSNY) fleet of thousands of vehicles—the trucks and street sweepers that are likely the most familiar element of the waste system for many New Yorkers—are repaired and refurbished at the Central Repair Shop, a building in central Queens that is as long as the Chrysler Building is tall.

Join us for a tour of the largest municipal vehicle and building repair facility in the nation. This tour, led by DSNY officials, will highlight the million-square-foot space with a visit to the machine shop, engine room, rebuilding center, and truck repair and fabricating departments. It also offers a close-up look at the Class 8 Vehicle Lab, a state-of-the-art innovation center and one of only three in the country.

The CRS is a working heavy industrial site, and participants should dress accordingly. Hard-soled, closed-toe shoes are a must. Visitors will also be required to sign a waiver upon entering the building.
